Isle of Pladda Lighthouse - While at Denham Youd ltd

The Isle of Pladda Lighthouse Retreat is a proposal to restore and adapt the dilapidated lighthouse outbuildings on the Isle of Pladda, a small island off the coast of Arran. Designed as an off-grid holiday home, the scheme seeks to breathe new life into the historic structures while embracing the unique environmental and cultural character of the island.

A central ambition of the project is to create a fully self-sufficient retreat powered entirely by renewable energy sources. The design adopts a low-impact approach, working exclusively within the existing building footprint to minimise disturbance to the island’s sensitive ecology, including its birdlife and surrounding marine habitats.

The architectural intervention draws inspiration from the Art Deco heritage often associated with coastal civic and maritime buildings. A carefully integrated extension increases the capacity of the principal lighthouse outbuilding, providing the additional accommodation and living space required for comfortable family life on the island while respecting the scale and character of the existing structures.

By combining heritage restoration, environmental responsibility, and contemporary living, the proposal offers a sustainable future for a unique coastal landmark, allowing visitors to experience the island’s remote landscape while preserving its natural and historic significance.
