Hornsey Library Renovation - Designed while working at CLTH

As part of the team at CLTH, I contributed to the interior refurbishment of a much-loved public library in Haringey. The project focused on preserving the building’s historic character while introducing thoughtful interventions to improve functionality, accessibility, and the overall user experience.

The design carefully retains and restores many of the library’s defining architectural features, including the original book stacks, marble staircases, ironmongery, and external concrete friezes. These elements form the foundation of the refurbishment, ensuring the building’s heritage remains central to its identity.

New interventions within the shared spaces include upgraded lighting, contemporary seating, and a cohesive internal design language that brings clarity and longevity to the library’s future use. Significant additions to the scheme include a new computer suite, a redesigned children’s library, and integrated storage facilities for buggies and personal belongings.

From the outset, I was involved in design workshops with the local council and project stakeholders, helping to shape the direction of the scheme. I was responsible for the design of several bespoke elements, including the interactive book arch within the children’s library and a series of custom radiator benches designed specifically for the project. During the later stages of the refurbishment, I also contributed to the specification process using NBS, helping to define material selections and coordinate the final project details through to completion.
